A little something for all those of you who are enjoying summer at the top end of the world...though in many ways, it feels just as appropriate to me for our Autumn, which is a time of renewal and of greening after the long, dry summer. A favourite song by a favourite group, Gjallarhorn, about the Goddess of Spring bringing new life after the long hard winter. I found a rough translation of the lyrics, so have posted them below. Best played LOUD, and danced around to if possible!
Suvetar, fine matron
Arise to see the seeds
Raise the matron's corn
So that we may be spared pain
Manutar, matron of the Earth
Lift up the shoots from the ground
New shoots from the stumps
So that we may be spared pain
Feed us with honey-hearts
Give us honey-drink
Delicious honey-grass
On a blossoming knoll
You have shining silver
You have glistening gold
Rise up, O maiden
Black from the soil
Underground crone
Most ancient of Nature's daughters
Make the peat shoot forth
And the ground turn over
Underground crone
Most ancient of Nature's daughters
Lift up a thousand seedlings
To reward my efforts.
I LOVED the music video. Do you know what language this is sung in? I forwarded your blog to all of my Earth Mother friends.

Oh Yeah, another thing - although it's supposed to be close to summer here, we still have rain - lots of rain - almost every day. The grass is 3 feet high already. Not that I'm complaining. I love the moss and the greenness of everything.
ReplyDeleteThankyou for this Christina! This is such a lovely time of year with everything bursting into life and new beginnings. I do love the change in seasons don't you?xx
ReplyDeletemmmm - I bet we'd love each other's music collections! Do you know the CD "Wizard Women of the North?" If not, I think you would.... similar sound... I think its Northside recording.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Thank you so for posting this, i fell in love with the song and had to go and discover more about the band! the video is wonderful too. x have a wonderful weekend x
ReplyDeleteSnap! Valerianna...I do indeed have 'Wizard Women' in my collection, and love it! EW, I believe this song is sung in a very old form of Finnish dialect, but don't quote me on that...they are a brilliant band and I have 3 of their CDs. Jessie, yes, I love Autumn and Spring, the change-over seasons, when everything seems new and revitalised...the only problem with Spring here, is that I know the long, hot summer will follow soon after.
ReplyDeleteHi Ruthie, you must have been posting as I was writing! I love the video too, really gives the feeling of rebirth doesn't it?!
ReplyDeleteFantastic video and lyrics, I love songs in old languages... My sister in law sings bewitchingly in Anglo-Saxon and this reminded me...
ReplyDeletealmost midnight - this music makes me feeling very 'light' - thanks a lot - have to find some more of them
