Phew! I think they're sort of finished...

Finished at about 2pm this afternoon, photos taken and emailed off at 3pm, so hopefully they were received alright.  There will, no doubt, be some final tweaking and twiddling and embellishing...and of course, some varnishing, but that's a job for next week...or maybe the week after, if my work is selected, as they don't want the actual paintings till the end of September.  I won't know till next Wednesday, so fingers crossed!
This is Shipwreck Coast - Tethys gathers them in
(I hope she doesn't look too much like Sideshow Bob's sister!)

I wrote the Seafarer's Prayer at about 1pm this afternoon (last-minute-mermaid, that's me), and the text along the bottom are quotes about shipwrecks along the 'Shipwreck Coast' from a book very conveniently co-authored by my clever mum, which is why I got a free copy!

And this is my little Ocean Heart, with more mermaid scribbles.  I don't think this is quite finished, but it had to do.

  1. loving it - your pictures calm me. perhaps it is the colours, perhaps the waves, maybe even the words. I'm thinking commission...i'm thinking breathing out, long and slow..just breathe.

  3. I love the many layers of her hair... I can swim around inside as if in seaweed, deep, blue dreaming. Lovely!
    Good luck!

Hmmm, the word verification was "anger"! I mis-spelled it sort of on purpose so they gave me another..."ingustri", much better.

  5. Both fantastic pieces of work. I love the translucency of the woman of the sea, dwarfing the ship yet benevolent and the way you have used the text. I especially love the swirling tendrils of her hair that seem like the winds of the storm...
    Good luck with the competetion!

(ooh, word verification is 'conquerr' could be quite positive!)

  6. Thanks all! I'm so glad Her compassion shows, that's what I was aiming for. That though she may be the goddess of the sea, it is a wild and untamable thing, and when it vents its fury on small insignificant humans, she is there to take their hands and bring them home to her. My oldest was a bit horrified "Mummy, is she making that boat sink? But those people will all die!!" and I wasn't quite sure how to explain it to her!
